Split cane rods were made from six segments split from a bamboo cane. These were glued together to form a tapered hexagonal rod. The Hardy Palakona split cane rod won them a gold medal in 1881. They were great innovators inventing among other things spiral lock joints, stud lock joints and split end joints for hardy fly rods.
