Fishing Report

For the Week ending 29th November 2009

**********************************

We trust that you had a safe thanksgiving. The weather the past week has been very comfortable and clear. With temperatures getting up into the 40’s and clear blue skies, snow on the mountains, the start of the ski season and some great fishing during the week. Who could ask for more?

Over the next 10 days, the weather is forecast to remain generally clear with a possibility of some snow on Wednesday and maybe next Saturday. Of course with predictions so far off it is more guesswork that accuracy. But if the weather is similar to this past week, there should be some excellent fishing all around. Jake reported some great floating on the Colorado while Mike had some great fishing on the Pan.

The ski slopes are reporting a good base, and with 400 acres of terrain open on Snowmass it is a good start to the year. But the recession is taking its toll on the ski slopes with 200 fewer jobs on offer and twice as many applicants as usual for the jobs available.

With the recession in full swing, it seems to be a great idea to increase taxes on visitors. At least that’s the view of the City of Aspen who want to increase the current lodging tax of .5 to 1.5%. Our cabins aren’t in the resort area, so it will just make them a little bit more attractive. Strange times though. Things are tough in a town which relies on tourism, so why not beat the tourists over the head a little more? But at least in keeping with modern financing practices, the money has been disbursed before it has been collected.

It also seems that extracting lucre from tourists is not the only excision occurring in Colorado with another report that the aliens have returned and are doing similar things to cattle.

It must be something in the water. And speaking of water, the issue of the releases from Ruedi surfaced in the local papers again this week. This is the second article in 2 weeks from Scott Condon. It is good to keep this issue bubbling along in the forlorn hope that someone might take notice next year and take our fishing access into account when the calls are made on the water.

With the ski season underway and some excellent weather in the next week, we would expect to see a few more visitors on our rivers. So if you are up this way, it would be an excellent consideration.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 78cfs. (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

The continuation of warm weather during the day and freezing temperatures over night made for very pleasant days out on the river provided one gave the sun time to warm the environs. There were great midge and bwo hatches during the week with fish taking both types of dries. The midges were small but the bwos were quite large, down to #18 in some instances. In addition with the browns still up on the redds the big rainbows were feeding on the eggs drifting down.

We had a number of visitors in town over the Thanksgiving holiday and it was evident in the traffic near the dam. At one stage there were 8 fishermen on the flats all in close proximity. With the water so low and the number of fishermen walking about kicking up moss, the fishing was better a little further downstream provided the sun stayed on the water. When rising the fish took BWO emergers and gray biots as well as very small adams with the tail clipped.

Mid-river the fishing was also excellent with the fish taking the fpa sparkle baetis, olive wd40’s and micro baetis patterns. The best results were nymphing with very few fish coming up for dries now. It is a matter of fishing down to the fish if they are lying low. They have little inclination to come up far to take a fly drifting overhead.

On Saturday evening a little snow fell on the Frying Pan. By Sunday morning it was blue skies again. The temperature climbed during the day to be in the high 30’s by the afternoon. The dry fly fishing near the dam was excellent with small midges coming off in the sun. The trout took a parachute adams #20 and a #28 gray adult midge behind it.

The weather for the coming week promises generally similar conditions with the possibility of a little snow on Wednesday. But with the temperatures expected to be in the high 30s and 40s the hatches will be strong and the dry fly fishing towards the dam will be good. So we will be expecting some more great fishing. So dress for the winter and be prepared to shed a few layers.

Recommended Flies:  As the days are getting shorter and colder those sections of the Pan which get shade in the afternoon slow down before the sunnier areas.

We are now down to BWO and midge hatches. For baetis try the FPA sparkle baetis #20-#22, FPA emerging baetis #22 - #26 and small pheasant tails #20 - #24. When they start to emerge try loopwing emergers, rs2's, and gray and olive biot patterns. When they get up on to the surface use Parachute Adams, gray special emergers, olive body dries such as the matthews sparkle dun olive #18 - #22, the cdc comparadun, parachute blue duns and gulper specials.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try WD-40's #20, red and black chironocones #20, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, black polywings #18 - #22 and garcia's rojo midges # 18 - #22. Mike reported great success this week on smaller black midges such as the miracle midge.

As they come off try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, suspended midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26, loopwing emergers #20 - #22 and FPA special emergers #20 - #26.

Now that the fish are on the redds, fish below them with egg patterns as the rainbows will be waiting for the eggs to drift down. But try not to disturb the fish on the redds.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 314cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

A week of warm clear days with freezing overnight temperatures has slowed down the flow a little and the warmer weather made for pleasnat floating after the sun gets onto the water.

The flow remains low and makes for tough floating except in a raft below Carbondale. But the wading access in now excellent and ideal with the fish up on the redds.

The fishing remains excellent with eggs, streamers, and attractor patterns with some excellent fishing on the Fork through Basalt.

Recommended Flies: Although there will still be some bwo's and midges coming off the most reliable results now will be nymphing with eggs, princes and other attractor patterns.

For streamers try the autumn splendor, the yellow madonnas and the olive woolly buggers. Try streamers with stinger hooks. This will help solve the short striking problem of big browns.

Colorado River

The flows in the Colorado have ensured that it is the preferred destination for float traffic. Jake reports some excellent days of late with the fish taking midges and egg patterns. He says that the browns are almost done with the spawn down there so the fish are settling back for the coming winter. But the warm weather and good water conditions ensure that the Colorado conditions are excellent.

Recommended Flies: eggs, attractors and midges. Try streamers such as the autumn splendor, the yellow madonna and woolly buggers.
