Fishing Report

For the Week ending 25th January 2009

After a warm start to the week, the expected snow blew in on Friday for a couple of days. However it was so warm that the snow was wet and on some occasions on Friday afternoon it was actually raining at Basalt. The snow which fell on the bare ground and roads melted off by Sunday afternoon.

There is a further prediction for some snow on Monday and maybe Wednesday but the remainder of the week will be warm and clear. It may not be as warm as last week and the overnight temperatures will drop a little lower. But overall the weather should be fine and clear opening the way for some more good fishing.

This week we had the X Games on in Aspen and as a consequence a number of visitors came down valley for some fishing. There we excellent reports, particularly midweek as the clouds blew over holding in the warmth.

The rain and recent snows coupled with warmer weather have caused the run-off to pick up in the rivers dissipating the latest falls somewhat at lower elevations. So the rivers are continuing to clear on the edges, particularly lower down affording reasonable access. Higher up the ice has tended to remain on the edges providing the fish with plenty of cover and protection.

As January progresses, the sun is getting noticeably higher in the sky extending the period one can fish on the river in direct sunlight. So with the lengthening days and relatively warm weather there is ample opportunity to enjoy some good fishing during the day if one happens to be in the area. We would love to see you.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam - 75cfs. (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

The continuation of the warm weather earlier in the week settled the snow more along the edges of the river making access a little less difficult. The snow over the past few days has been so wet and warm, that it has hardly been noticeable even though it was quite heavy. It melted away by the end of the following days after each fall leaving the roads dry and clear.

The cloud cover and warm weather prior to the snow falls afforded some excellent fishing, particularly towards the dam on midges.

The fish are still taking egg patterns as well just below the dam where the browns are still out on the redds. So take care of them and stay clear. There is no point standing on a redd dragging egg patterns across disturbing the spawning fish. It takes no skill to hook them and disturbs breeding patterns for next season.

Recommended Flies:  Now we are well into winter conditions, and the patterns will be predominantly midges and egg patterns. Try a worm pattern and a hare’s ear as well as an attracter for variety.

With the days noticeably shorter, it is now a matter of trying to follow the sun. When it is cloudy the distinction between light and shadow will be less pronounced but on a bright day, as soon as the sun goes behind any of the peaks it will get colder quite quickly and the midge hatches will abate.

As the conditions get colder it will be a matter of fishing to the depth of the fish. That will be key. If the fish are lying low just add weight to your midge patterns until you can drift the fly right to the fish.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try WD-40's #20 , red and black chironocones #20, brassie's #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, black polywings #18 - #22 and garcia's rojo midges # 18 - #22.

If the fish start moving higher in the water column or get active under the surface, try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22.

When they are on the surface, try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, suspended midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns such as a parachute Adams in sizes from #20 through to #28.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 295cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

The warmer weather earlier in the week continued the melt and pushed up the flows in the Fork. The snow and rain of the more recent days merely added to the flows lower down as the warm weather melted the new accumulations quite rapidly.

The rain and snow over the weekend is predicted to pass shortly with the anticipation of principally warmer clear weather again from mid-week until next weekend. Consequently, this brief snowy interlude is of no consequence. The melt will continue for a while longer until we get some seriously colder weather.

As the days warm and the edges of the river become more accessible there will be good fishing in the wider sections. The better fishing on the Fork is lower down towards Glenwood however the weather over the past week has made the river more accessible closer to mid-valley in the wider sections where the sun can shine for longer periods during the days.

Recommended Flies: Try midges and eggs as well as very small baetis nymphs and attractors such as princes and hare's ears.

For baetis try nymph patterns such as pheasant tails #18 - #24. For midges look at our suggestions for the Pan.

In addition try san juan worms, brassies, and copper johns.

Colorado River

The Colorado can offer some good winter fishing particularly down lower where the sun can get onto the water.

Recommended Flies: BWO nymphs, emergers and dries; midge emergers and dries during the hatches, 20 inchers size #10 - #14; streamers #2 - #8, egg patterns.
