A number of fishermen are still taking advantage of the conditions and enjoying some excellent fishing on both the Fork and the Pan. The midges are hatching well as are the BWO’s. On Saturday the dry fly fishing on the Pan was excellent but on Sunday a little weather blew in with strong gusts making the fishing a little colder. We are coming into the Thanksgiving holidays so we trust that you will travel carefully.

Frying Pan Current Flow: below the Dam - 75cfs. (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)
The fishing remains excellent on the Pan although the water is even lower than it was a week ago. One hopes fervently that should some colder weather arrive that the Bureau will see fit to increase the flow in the Pan above this unacceptably low level to ensure there is minimal accumulation of anchor ice. We have a little while to go before the really cold weather is anticipated so there is time for sense to prevail. The fish continue to spawn lower down where the water is colder. The hatches are still excellent with a lot of midges coming off as well as some BWO’s. Harry reported some good fishing on the Pan this week with both midges and BWO’s. The biot emergers #20-#24 worked well. Lower down egg patterns worked together with baetis emergers and midge patterns. With the water remaining low the fish are congregating in the deeper pools and below redds. The coming week promises clear warm weather until Thanksgiving so the midge hatches should be excellent.Recommended Flies: We are now well into Autumn so as the season progresses and it cools down, the bugs are getting smaller. So be prepared mostly for midges and BWO's. In addition as the fish are staging for the spawn, try egg patterns. They spawn earlier lower down because the water gets colder quickly. The spawning will be done soon but at the dam with the warmer water the fish will be still on the redds into February. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try WD-40's #20 , red and black chironocones #20, brassie's #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, black polywings #18 - #22 and garcia's rojo midges # 18 - #22. If the fish start moving higher in the water column or get active under the surface, try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22. When they are on the surface, try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, suspended midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns such as a parachute Adams in sizes from #20 through to #28. For baetis, try some small nymph patterns such as pheasant tails and the FPA sparkle baetis #20 - #24 down deep. In addition try the emerger patterns like crystal hunchback, juju baetis, the mighty mite, icebreakers and the FPA sparkle baetis - #18 - #24 and rs2 #18 - #22 and soft hackle baetis #18 -#22. If BWO’s start to come off try dry patterns like the adams and parachute adams #20-#24 and the matthews #18 - #24 with an emerger dropper. If the fish are under the surface try fishing 2 emergers with a very small weight to get the flies down a little. An rs2#20 behind an FPA emerger or sparkle baetis with a thorax bead will do the trick. On the bright days the BWO's will tend to come off in the shade. But if it starts to rain, don't come in. Just stay out on the water as long as you can.
The clear weather during the week brought the flow down just a little more in the Fork. In a day or so it will probably be below 300cfs. But the warm weather during the day has caused the flows to fluctuate a little more than usual. The fishing remains good with streamers, eggs, midges and baetis working above Basalt if you are wading. With the promise of some warmer weather over the next few days, there is still some time to get out onto the river. However with the promise of some snow on Thanksgiving, we are getting close to the end. Recommended Flies: Try baetis and midges. For baetis try nymph patterns such as pheasant tails #18 - #24. Baetis emergers try RS2, the crystal hunchback, juju baetis, the mighty mite, icebreakers and the FPA sparkle baetis - #18 - #24. Try Barrs emergers, the bubbleback, and the FPA PMD beadtail emergers. For midges look at our suggestions for the Pan. In addition, try princes, san juan worms, egg patterns, brassies, and copper johns. If you are floating, try streamers as well as egg patterns.
Colorado River The Colorado is very clear and being a little warmer is still offering some good fishing below Glenwood.Recommended Flies: BWO nymphs, emergers and dries; midge emergers and dries during the hatches, larger PMD nymphs down to #14 as well as emergers and dries, 20 inchers size #10 - #14; streamers #2 - #8. egg patterns.
