Fishing Report

For Week ending 16th October 2004

Great News This week. One of our senior guides John Dobson guided the boat which came second in the 2 nd Annual Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Classic. The tournament was a catch and release point accumulation tournament over 2 days on the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers. The tournament was conducted in teams fishing from a flotilla of boats. Each team consisted of 2 fishermen and the guide. Against intense competition, John demonstrated superior boatmanship and fishing experience to achieve a great result. Well done. Autumn colors continue to adorn the rivers and mountains. There has not been much wind to date so the leaves a clinging a little longer. We had a little rain last week and on Monday evening but mostly it has been blue skies and warm days. The fishing overall continues to be great.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 150 cfs. (if you want more up to date figures check out current readings on our "Links" page) The water in the Pan has been running at 150 for the past week. Apart from some rain last Monday evening the days have been gloriously sunny. The rain just freshened everything up. As always, the mysis shrimp is working for the first half mile below the dam at Reudi Reservoir. We had some good reports this week of big fish being cause just below the dam. We continue to see good afternoon hatches of baetis, size #20 and smaller. Doug and Jeff Healy came out West to fish with their Dad (Tom) on the Frying Pan over the weekend. On Monday guided by John Dobson they had great success on the upper pan with RS2's, copper johns and Roy's emergers. Jeff (not as experienced as Doug and Tom) outfished them both much to their chagrin. Then they headed lower on the Pan to our private access water adjacent to Taylor Creek Cabins. Just above Knight road the water was loaded with surface feeding fish in the shallow riffles. Caddis and baetis patterns with small droppers were the ticket. As this point class and experience took over and Tom and Doug exceeded. Tom took the prize with a 17 inch rainbow taking the spotlight caddis in inches of water. Recommended Flies: baetis #20 and smaller; mathews sparkle dun #20; sparkle baetis emerger #18; brooks sprout baetis #20; barrs blue wing olive emerger #18 and #20; AK's parachute Olive quill #20; dark olive pheasant tails and olive biot emergers, size #20 and #22; midges, size #20 and smaller.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma 350 cfs. (if you want more up to date figures check out current readings on our "Links" page) The water temperature continues to fall. The red quills continue to come off from late morning through the afternoon. Evening hatches of caddis, blue-winged Olive and midges will continue as long as the weather holds. The Roaring Fork is also continuing to fish well with baetis, midges, and on the lower stretch near Glenwood Springs, some caddis activity. As noted above, the red quills size 14 and 16 are active. Recommended Flies: same as the Frying Pan. Red quills size 14 and 16; elk hair caddis #16 and smaller for the adult and a prince nymph #16 and #18 for the emerger; carrot nymph #18; red copper john #20; gold ribbed hare’s ear #16 and #18; 20 incher stone #14; Blue Wing Olives #20; egg patterns #10 - #18; streamers #10 (on some days); autumn splendor #4 - 8; bead head pops bugger olive #6.

Colorado River

The Colorado continues to well with streamers from a boat, as well as dry flies in the shallows. As noted above John Dobson had great results on the Colorado last weekend in the 2 nd Annual Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Classic

Recommended Flies: Bead head pheasant tails #16, 18; Blue Wing Olives #18,20; bead head prince nymph red #12 - 16; stimulators #10 - 14; egg patterns #10 - #18;
