We are continuing to expand our range of flies and sizes. For the 2012 year, we anticipate we will have in excess of 6000 patterns and sizes of trout flies!
We are reliably informed that as a retail shop we have one of the largest range of patterns and sizes of trout flies in the World! We are starting to load an index with photos of all of our flies which can be accessed at the "Fly Index" link on the left of each page or else just go here.
No joke! How are we doing it you might well ask. Apart from continuing to find new patterns we are reintroducing a lot of older patterns which have been discarded because of the fashions of the fishermen, not evolution in the insect population. There are plenty of older styles which work particularly well, and continue to do so simply because fishermen don't use them and educate the trout.
Some of the patterns we have tied exclusively for ourselves in response to specific requests from our guides and our staff. In other cases we have had special sizes tied of existing patterns where we think that the size adjustment will work well. A good example is the prince nymph where we are having them tied down to #24. Some midge patterns we are having tied down to #32!! We carry tippet down to 12x for such small flies.
We are continually exploring new patterns and introducing new flies to try and make your fishing experience memorable.
Each year we look at the new patterns coming on to the market to see if any will catch fish as well as catching our eye. We are meeting a number of very clever designers who are pushing the limits and we love it. We want to test the flies ourselves then we will let you in on the new developments as they prove themselves.
So come by the shop on your next visit and take a look. The new patterns will be coming in over the next 6 months. We try our best to have the definitive range and by all accounts have the largest range of patterns and sizes of trout flies in North America.
We live by the motto that "he who has the most flies wins". We have to say that at the moment we are in front by a country mile!!
In a water as popular as the Frying Pan the trout get to visit with all manner of flies and presentations in the course of the season. That is one reason why it is always worth dropping us a line or having a chat with our staff to get the current conditions. They will gladly give you the latest advice on what is working and if necessary the techniques necessary to employ in presenting the flies.
We have our flies tied by a number of well known companies to obtain the best range of patterns available.
We also have members of our team who tie flies with which we experiment and test before giving them to the commercial companies to tie for us.
This coming season we will have over 4,500 patterns and sizes of trout flies. We have received requests from time to time for a catalogue of our inventory. At this point we think that would be an unnecessary undertaking. However what we have decided to do is to make a list of our small flies. All of the smaller flies we have are custom ties as there are very few flies offered by the major fly companies under #26.
Consequently, if you are interested in our smaller flies have a look at our range and we would be happy to send them to you. Our charges are $1.90 per fly with a minimum of 1 dozen. Our postage charges are $3. But on orders over $50 postage will be free.
We have found that a number of fishermen from all over the country are beginning to come to us simply to fill in gaps in their collections of flies. It may be an older pattern which has fallen into disfavor and is not generally available. This year for instance we are getting some breadcrust patterns tied up which have not been generally available for years. We also get existing patterns tied in either smaller or larger sizes than are generally available. The #22 and #24 prince mentioned above are good examples.
If you are doing an early season check and find that your local fly shop does not have a pattern or a size you want, give us a call and see if we can help. We will gladly take your order and if we can fill it we will post the flies out to you.
We are here to help and would love to hear from you.
